This week’s been a bit more relaxed than the past three as campaigns are live, and I’m working with my clients on monitoring performance and tweaking the online content and approach.
I’ve been able to do a load of reading while researching for current work and upcoming client proposals (links and resources further down this post). Plus, some creativity with writing and drawing, as well as catching up with old friends and colleagues.
Platforming people’s lived experience
One highlight was publishing this new webinar as part of my role at Hereditary Brain Aneurysm Support — the first time we’ve brought our Patient Panel and Advisory Panel members together with a really useful discussion that’s had a great reaction in online support groups for people affected by the condition. A brilliant demonstration of HBA Support’s values and approach — a platform for people’s voices and lived experience.
We launched HBA Support a year ago, so I’ll be publishing a blog next week on how we launched a new not-for-profit and how I was able to embed a community-led ethos into the values and structure of the organisation.
Reading and research focus
As it’s been a less frantic week, finding time for more reading, research, and thinking has been a treat, something I love being able to do as a consultant.
This week, my mind was focused on the themes of sustainability, community and change. I discovered a resource for any campaigners and communications professionals from Community Change.org that has a helpful model for reframing conversations for more positive outcomes. I shared the handbook in the Better Business Network Slack group, which led to a brilliant discussion on why Doing change is far more impactful than just talking about it and hoping policymakers will follow).
If anyone’s got tips/resources /recommendations on who to follow for best practice in participation, civic engagement, democracy and sustainability, please list them in the comments. I’m especially interested in anything in the arts/performing arts or rural community development spaces.

Other highlights from this week have included:
First coaching session with Laura Rhodes as we look to build a marketing plan to support her excellent brand and lifestyle photography business. Laura did my brand photography earlier this year — she’s hugely talented and an all-around wonderful person. Have a look at her website: https://www.laurarhodesphotography.co.uk

Consultancy session with the team at Birmingham’s science museum Thinktank team, we’re looking at the best ways to increase membership purchases onsite over the next quarter. (I’m also pondering what membership could look like if there was a more significant transition from a financially-based membership to a more open, democratic, participatory model…)
HBA Support awareness campaign — webinar and patient guides co-designed by genomics professionals, and our patient and advisory panel went live.
Lastly, while working on a proposal for an arts organisation, I discovered that a 60-second explainer on the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition I created four years ago is still being used. Clearly, it can be bettered! Really proud to discover this. Scroll down to view Summer Exhibition in 60 Seconds on this webpage: https://www.royalacademy.org.uk/summer-exhibition
