New brand for David Salmon Consulting!

One of many fab new brand photos by Laura Rhodes Photography

I’m really proud to launch a new brand for David Salmon Consulting, brilliantly conceived and executed by Max Lilley of Bite Design and Laura Rhodes Photography.

We’ve been working on this since the start of the new year, and it marks just over 12 months since the launch of David Salmon Consulting.

Last year I scrambled to get a website and name together for my new venture, unsure if I could make a freelance career out of my experience and skills in marketing, communications and management roles across charity, heritage and arts sectors.

A year on, I wanted to build a proper, confident brand that showcases my practice, offer and areas of expertise after last year's initial ‘get it launched’ / "I've no idea what I'm doing or where this is heading" phase.

But I needed outside help to provide creative and critical eyes — especially overcoming how I’m perceived vs how I may perceive myself in a professional setting.

So I brought Max and Laura together to collaborate on the David Salmon Consulting brand. Here's an overview of why/how etc., for any brand geeks in my network...

Approach

I’m really pleased with the outcomes of this collaboration between two amazing creatives. Working with two creative, professional and fun friends has been great, and I hope it's the start of future collaborations.

Max led on the design, whilst Laura’s amazing brand photography helped create a wealth of assets while informing the colours, look and feel of the brand personality.

Early designs from Max at Bite Design. After some user testing, we dialled down the font for better accessibility.

We developed the brand using a model that Max and I had worked on a few pitches around brand purpose in the autumn of last year. To be honest, we weren't entirely satisfied, and the pitches hadn't landed. So I wanted to develop our ideas and model — inspired by community and purpose-led thinking and lots of background research — to the David Salmon Consulting brand as a real-world test.

Outcome

“David Salmon Consulting exists to help individuals, teams, and organisations achieve their full potential, promote excellence, foster business innovation and change, and promote ethical and sustainable business practices.”

I'm really pleased to now have a purpose-based brand that platforms David Salmon Consulting and showcases my approach, ethos and experience, including:

  • A highly visual brand with a rich colour palette, imagery, font and iconography. Lots of space for creativity and growth.

  • Brand images, colours, font and assets reflect my background in museums and arts alongside a community and people-first focus gained from working in the third sector.

  • No ‘logo’ — a combination of font and a smaller mark that’s part of a responsive logo system (when the word mark is too long, the smaller icon can take over) and acts as a framing device to house imagery. It's a flexible, pragmatic and stylish approach that works really well.

What's next?

  • The website has been in beta this week, with feedback from key people in my network coming in so we can tweak it over time.

  • We’ve begun to roll out assets and embed the brand.

  • A little bit of snagging as the brand is rolled out.

  • Continue to develop values and showcase purpose and practice

Let me know what you think, and if you’re interested in the brand purpose model, I’d be happy to chat and share my learnings, ideas and thinking.
